10 THINGS YOU WANT TO HAVE in YOUR LIVING ROOM
Need some inspiration to give your living room a bit of an update? From small tweaks to bigger transformations, the living rooms of our favorite bloggers are filled with ideas you’ll want to replicate in your own home.
1. Beautifully Designed Bookshelf
There’s no better way to show off your favorite books and knick-knacks than a perfectly styled bookshelf. From stacks of antique first editions to collections by your favorite authors, there are lots of ways to style a bookshelf. Get some cute bookends, some framed pictures, and decorative accents and try to create lots of difference in height. Just make sure no two shelves looks too similar!
2. Faux Fur or Sheepskin
If you want to make your living room feel luxurious, one of the quickest and most effective ways of doing that is to add some fur, faux fur, or sheepskin here and there. But be sure to keep it to a minimum with pieces like an accent pillow and a small rug. This white pillow is the perfect addition to any space, but feel free to mix it up with different colors if that’s what you’re into.
3. Bar Cart
Whatever your drink of choice, a bar cart is the perfect way to elevate your living room. Gather your favorite liquor or wine (or sparkling water), cocktail accessories, and some pretty glasses and style them alongside some decorative accents for a sophisticated addition to your space. Plus, it’ll make you and your house super popular.
4. Metallic Accents
Whether you’re a traditionalist and prefer gold and silver, or you like to get a little creative with rose gold, metallics are an essential part of living room decor. Use it in picture frames, wall accents, or decorative pieces here and there to add a little bit of glamour to your living room.
5. Stunning Statement Couch
Say goodbye to neutral couches: statement couches in bright colors and luxurious fabrics are surprisingly versatile! When redecorating your living room, start with the couch and pick a color that you think will be appropriate for your design style and easy to mix with different accent pillows and other design elements. This blue velvet sofa is the perfect combination of a vibrant color and snazzy fabric.
6. Exquisitely Styled Coffee Table
Nothing says, “I’m a well put-together adult,” like a beautifully styled coffee table. Start with a great piece of furniture that you love and add elements that show off your personality. Art books, decorative accents, fresh flowers, your favorite dish, or a pretty tray are all great places to start. Keep it simple (you still want to be able to use your table!), but mix a few different pieces in different shapes, heights, and textures to create a really balanced look.
7. Great Accent Chair (or Two!)
When it comes to choosing a great accent chair, it’s not just about having an extra place to sit. If you want to keep your couch more muted, an accent chair is the perfect piece of furniture to inject some personality, fun, and color into your living room. Look for shapes that will stand out, like this twist on a classic wingback, and pair it with some playful accent pillows to really amp up the style factor in your space. If you want more than one accent chair, you can buy two of the same or get really creative and mix and match styles.
8. Framed Mantra
Do you have a favorite mantra or phrase that inspires you every day? Get it framed and display it in your living room! Hang it in your gallery wall, display it on your bookshelf, or add it to your bar cart for some daily ‘you-power’ inspiration
9. Funky Shag Rug
Having a high-quality rug is an essential way to anchor any person’s space, and shag rugs are fun. These work best on a wood floor or low pile carpet to create dimension, but honestly they’d look great in any space. Graphic designs and neutral colors are a popular choice — just make sure the rug you choose doesn’t overwhelm your room. A good rule of thumb for sizing is to leave about 18 inches of floor exposed on each side, but it’s really a matter of what you love — so follow your heart!
10. Gallery Wall
Yes, gallery walls are in almost every home these days — but there’s a great reason for that! The gallery wall is an impressive focal point and is so customizable, no two will ever be the same. Whether you choose to show off your own artwork, prints you’ve collected over the years, or your favorite photographs, it’s a fun way to combine all of the things you love into one cohesive whole.
